The best tables, now easier to book

We’re making it even easier to enjoy great dining with First Table.

Our mission has always been simple: help diners discover amazing restaurants while enjoying 50% off food, as a reward for dining at an off-peak time. Now we’re introducing a few updates that make planning your next meal easier than ever.

As of today, you now have more time to plan and a more convenient table release time,

Book up to 14 days ahead (not 7)

You can now book your First Table up to 14 days in advance, giving you more time to plan dinners, celebrations, and catch-ups with friends.

Whether you’re organising a special night out or locking in a midweek meal, having two weeks of availability means the best tables are easier to secure.

Tables now release at midday (not 9pm)

No more waiting around for the evening release.

Previously, new tables became available for the week ahead at 9pm. Now, tables will roll over at midday, making it much easier to grab the table you want during the day.

It’s a simple change that makes planning your next meal feel effortless.

Early access for Frequent Foodies®

If you’re a Frequent Foodies® Silver, Gold or Platinum member, your varying levels of Early Access passes still give you a head start on everyone else.

With the new booking window, your early access passes now let you book 15 days in advance, keeping you one full day ahead of other diners when the best tables appear.

Making First Table easier for every dining occasion

These changes are part of our mission to make First Table the first place you go for every dining experience.

Book earlier, plan further ahead, and enjoy discovering great restaurants.

Our values, refreshed ✨

Guiding the next chapter at First Table

At First Table, our values are the compass that keeps us moving in the same direction.

As we step into our next stage of growth, we've sharpened that compass, with values that will help us scale with clarity, make the right calls quickly, and stay aligned as one global team.

We've gone from six values down to three. Why? Because simplicity creates focus and focus creates power.

These three values: Win–Win–Win, Own It, and Grow Together give us the framework to make fast, aligned decisions, hire well, and keep growing as one global team.

Here's the story behind the refresh, and how these values are already shaping the way we work.

Why now?

Our original six values served us well in our early years. But as we scaled across markets and teams, some carried more weight than others. A few overlapped, while others did not always translate into daily decisions.

So, we took a step back and asked ourselves: Which values truly resonate with our people? Which ones show up naturally in our culture? And which do we need most for the road ahead?

With that feedback, our Executive Leadership Team aligned the values with strategy and then partnered with colleagues across the business to refine the language. The goal was straightforward: to create values that act as clear, functional and practical guardrails, helping us make aligned decisions, focus our planning and drive consistent behaviours across the organisation.

Bringing them to life

Once the three were set, our marketing team brought them to life. From bespoke designs to a custom Slack emoji pack, the values are woven into how we communicate and celebrate one another.

We launched them at our July Global All Hands with a spotlight rhythm: each month, one value takes centre stage. Leaders bring it into their talks with real examples, and a peer-nominated values award celebrates the behaviours in action. This cadence keeps the values alive and builds a shared bank of stories that remind us what living the values really looks like.

Our new values

Win–Win–Win: When our restaurants and diners win, we all win
A mindset of shared success. We think beyond ourselves and consider long-term impact on diners, restaurant partners, our team, and our stakeholders.

Own It: Be accountable. Drive progress
A commitment to clarity, integrity, and follow-through. We own our impact and build trust through consistent, respectful action.

Grow Together: Raise the bar, for yourself, your teammates and the business
We’re here to grow as a business, a team, and as individuals. We learn, adapt, and help each other get better, wherever we’re working from.

How they work operationally, functionally, and culturally

Operationally: They guide planning, prioritisation, and decision-making, acting as a filter for where we put our focus.

Functionally: They’re embedded in how we hire, onboard, and develop our people.

Culturally: They set the tone for how we collaborate, give feedback, and recognise one another’s contributions.

Looking ahead

This values refresh is more than just a branding exercise. With three sharp, actionable values, we’ve created a clear framework that aligns us for an exciting road ahead.

First Table is the #1 restaurant booking app in New Zealand

We’re proud to say that First Table has earned its place as New Zealand’s #1 restaurant booking app, and as an app folks genuinely love.

Back in 2014, we started with a simple idea: fill restaurants’ early tables and reward diners for showing up first. Fast-forward a decade, and that idea has turned into something pretty special, one that we’re completely proud of.

The favourite restaurant booking app for Kiwis

We’re proud to be the #1 restaurant booking app on iOS and Google Play, with thousands of happy reviews from our fantastic community. When Kiwis want to discover a new restaurant, this is where they come first.

Let’s look at the numbers:

We’re ranked as the #1 restaurant booking app on both iOS and Google Play

4.9 stars with 1,700+ amazing reviews on the iOS App Store

Over 100,000 downloads and 4.6 stars with 2,400+ glowing reviews on Google Play

And we’re the #1 restaurant booking platform by web traffic

We’ve reached this point in just three years since launching the app. It’s been an incredible ride, and we owe it to our partner restaurants and the diners who trust us to give them a unique dining experience.

New Zealand’s first stop when booking a table

We’ve come a long way from that first idea in Queenstown, but our mission hasn’t changed: make dining out easier, more exciting, and a little more rewarding.

We’re lucky enough to have over 1,200 restaurants and over 880,000 diners on board in New Zealand, making us the country’s biggest dining community.

In fact, over the past decade, we’ve seated more than five million diners across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK during off-peak times, supporting local restaurants, reducing empty tables, and making nights out that much better.

First Table is where great dining starts

The numbers are exciting, but what really matters to us is the impact. Helping support local businesses and bringing people together over unforgettable meals and shared moments? That’s our real win (we’re still proud of the numbers, though).

From Auckland to Queenstown, Wellington, and even across the ditch to Australia and the UK, you’ll find First Table at the heart of great dining.

So next time you’re planning a night out, start where New Zealand starts: First Table.

How to take epic food pictures on your phone

Nine tips for great looking food images

Are you that foodie who insists on snapping pictures of a beautiful flat white and blueberry pancakes? Make the effort worth it and up your #myfirsttable game with these tips for better food snaps.

1. Whenever possible, shoot in natural light

Overcast days are perfect for taking great looking food pictures. You don’t want bright sunlight and you don’t want yellowy artificial light if you can help it. Pick a window seat with soft, natural light for the best results.

2. Take control of the shadows

We’re not talking about the supernatural here. Soft shadows are more flattering, too much contrast will create ugly pictures. Grab a white piece of paper (or the menu) and use it to reflect light onto your food for softer shadows.

3. Background beauty

Avoid fussy, colourful backgrounds. A neutral or muted background will bring out the details of your food better. Dark-coloured food looks best on a dark background and light-coloured food looks best on a light background. Fluffy white rice will look great on a light table cloth and that chocolate ice cream will look all the more chocolatey against a dark backdrop. A wooden background is your go-to, it compliments most foods.

4. Shoot from above

Shooting from above enables you capture all the beautiful shapes and details of your dish. Unless it’s a funky, multi-coloured smoothie in a glass – snap this from the side, on a neutral background to capture those layers! N.B. – there’s no need to stand on the chairs in a restaurant. Don’t be that person. Standing up to shoot from above will be just fine.

5. Think about the composition

You’re creating a masterpiece here! Think about empty and negative space in your picture. Arrange the dishes, cutlery and table pieces to create a composition that’s not too cluttered and is pleasing to the eye.

6. Get technical

Adjust the exposure, or brightness on your iPhone as you are taking the image by tapping the area you’d like to be sharp. This sets the focus. From here, you can slide you finger up and down the screen to make the image brighter or darker. You’ll get the best results if there’s not too much contrast in your image.

7. Post production

Enhance the colours in post-production – this can easily be done with a mobile app like Lightroom or Foodie.

8. Enjoy your food

Remember, a great dish is for sustenance and pleasure, not just your Instagram feed.

9. People

Here at First Table we're all about people sharing memorable food experiences together. Call us selfish, but we would love to see you and your friends, family and loved ones enjoying a delicious meal and trying new cuisines.
